Bread Mold Science Fair Projects Ideas

If you're looking for an interesting science fair project, then you may want to read more about bread mold science fair projects that you can do. They are easy and inexpensive to do but also allow you to follow all the steps of the scientific method.

It helps to first understand a little about mold. Mold is another word for fungi whose bodies gather and congeal together to form cottony vegetative bodies. Not all mold is cottony, however. Types of slimy mold are more like amoeba than their cottony cousins and leave a moister, slicker mass on the molded surface. However when it comes to bread, you will most always see the drier, threadlike mold.

Mold commonly grows on bread faster in warm, dark, moist conditions. However, mold can grow in light, and some molds can even grow on frozen foods. Molds grow in varying conditions, at varying speeds, in every color you can think of.

Not just a disgusting addition to old food, mold can be beneficial in many ways. One of the most common ways mold is used positively is to make antibiotics such as penicillin. In 1928, Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered penicillin when he found mold growing on a discarded petri dish. The mold itself was not the miracle. Fleming discovered that the mold that had grown had killed the Staphylococcus aureus that he'd been growing in that particular petri dish. The rest is history!

Now that you know a little more about bread mold, you can use the ideas below to help you find potential bread mold science fair projects.

Does sodium have an effect on the growth of bread mold?

How and why does mold form on bread?

Is bread mold harmful to the human body if consumed? Why?

What are the optimal conditions for growing bread mold? Why?

Does light have an effect on the growth of bread mold? If so, what kind?

Do certain types of breads mold faster than others?

How to grow bread mold...

Take a cotton swab and collect some dust. Wipe the dust over the bread slices you want to experiment with. Place them in a bag with a few drops of water and seal the bag so the slices don't dry out.

Now you know a little more about bread mold and the types of experiments you can do. You may have an idea of what you would like to try as a project. Simply by asking questions about things that interest you, you can come up with great bread mold science fair projects that can be fun to do!

To Clone or Not to Clone - Therein Lies the Question

Soon, you will be able to clone yourself, many religious folks maybe appalled by this, but I wouldn't be if I were you, it is a good thing and the science available from such things will increase life expectancy and help us stay young and fulfilled, in a youth like fashion for 100s of years.

Before passing judgment or accepting the party-line with your decision of whether cloning is good or bad - may I be so bold as to recommend a book to you that explains what cloning is and what the potential is, perhaps you might dump your perception for now and consider all this? The book is:

"In His Image - The Cloning of Man" by David Rorvik - 1978.

The first part of this book dives deep into the morality issues of cloning, the religious barriers of society and the reality of what will soon be possible. Part II of this book describes the exact methods as to how cloning works and the methods used to create this future destiny and advances in science and medicine.

Indeed cloning has been in the news quite a bit lately in fact an article in USA Today 11-12-2007: Ban human clones or expect them soon, U.N. says;

Failure to outlaw reproductive cloning means it is just a matter of time until cloned individuals share the planet," said Brendan Tobin, a human rights lawyer who co-authored the report.

And so what if they do, what if human scientists become their own god to a very limited degree and start cloning their own? Clones are people too, they will be humans, so what is the problem? Please think hard on this, and quoting scripture, well that is simply not a viable reason to prevent cloning, you are going to have to do better than that.

NY Times Reports On Intelligent Design Movement

Creation Science made the front page of the New York Times on recently. Oh... did I say Creation Science? Actually the article on the front page of the New York Times was about the Intelligent Design Movement.

Many scientists, academics and intellectuals from a variety of religious backgrounds (or no religious background) have seen that the utter complexity of single-celled organisms could not possibly have come into existence by random processes. They have come to the conclusion that an "intelligent designer" must have brought life into existence.

They came to this conclusion on the basis of scientific inquiry and without reliance on religious teaching. They have chosen the name "Intelligent Design Theory" to describe their position because terms like "creationism" and "creation science" carry obvious religious connotations.

Prominent among the Intelligent Design theorists is Dr. Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh university in Pennsylvania. Dr. Behe wrote a book called "Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution."

In this book Dr. Behe shows the irreducible complexity of single-celled life and that every structure of the cell must come into existence simultaneously for the cell to survive. For example, if a cell nucleus somehow forms accidentally it will die because it doesn't have mitochondria or cytoplasm or cell membrane etc.

Dr. Behe maintains that only an intelligent designer could design and build the immensely complex microscopic structure that comprises a living single-celled organism.

Dr. Behe used the illustration of a mousetrap. A mousetrap consists of a small board, a spring, a bar, a lever, a bait holder and bait. If any part is missing it won't function. It won't perform the simple function of catching a mouse.

Now try to imagine a mousetrap forming randomly in nature. By a bizarre coincidence erosion from an iron deposit yields a steel spring attached to a curved steel bar. this naturally formed mechanism somehow, by blind chance becomes attached to a piece of wood.

Another piece of metal washes up and gets attached to it and acts like a lever to hold the spring open but since there's no bait holder or bait the system cannot catch any mice and the whole thing simply rusts away into oblivion.

A cell nucleus, mitochondria, protoplasm and cell wall are far more complex than any mousetrap. Each of these cellular organs with their unfathomable complexity of proteins, RNA, DNA and other biochemicals must form simultaneously and then be assembled immediately.

For any person to teach that this happened randomly goes beyond the absurd to an almost insane stretch of the imagination. The concept of irreducible complexity is not limited to an analysis of single celled organisms.

Any organ system in any living thing can be seen to be irreducibly complex. The wings of an insect, so exquisitely formed as a miniature flying machine with perfect size, surface area and musculature are useless unless all parts are present and fully formed. The same applies to the retractable fangs, venom bladder and mouth musculature of a rattlesnake.

Partial assembly of any of the organ systems described above would be disadvantageous to the organisms. Therefore a very large number of favorable genetic mutations must occur simultaneously. This is a statistical impossibility.

Early in the 20th century researchers irradiated fruit flies in order to cause genetic mutations and bring evolutionary change. Fruit flies have short life spans and many generations can be observed in a short period. The radiation only produced deformed fruit flies and the experiment was abandoned.

I chuckle when I read of the excitement at NASA over the recent discovery of the evidence that water once existed on Mars. Some secularists even express faith that life could have formed on Mars because water was there.

Knowing what scientists have discovered about the complexity of "simple" living organisms, any speculation that life could have formed randomly in water on Mars is just wishful thinking on the part of those who reject God as creator.

Dr. Behe has shown through his elucidation of irreducible complexity that life could not have formed randomly. The foundation of Darwinian evolution is therefore totally destroyed. This is just one more proof that there is an intelligent designer of life. This intelligent designer is God.

The evolutionists have no adequate answer to the questions raised by Dr. Behe. The evolutionists don't even have a generally accepted theory as to how a single-celled organism could form by means of a random step-by-step process!

Opposition to evolution has now become scientifically respectable. The real academic issue is not the conflict between evolution and religion but rather the conflict between evolution and science.

Seventeenth century scientist, Francis Bacon, one of the founders of modern science is quoted as saying "A little science takes a man away from God, a little more science brings him back."

Bill Nugent has written many articles on Christianity, philosophy and science. He has also written books that give Bible based teaching on sanctification and that caution against the error of legalism. His books are available at his website http://www.gracelawandsonship.com.

Exotic Pet Insurance - For Your Not So Common Pet

Originally when pet insurance was first introduced about 30 years ago it was designed only for domestic dogs and cats. Today in the United States there are more than one hundred and fifty million dogs and cats owned as pets. About half a million (or less than half of one percent) of these pets are currently insured. Accordingly it stands to reason that the market potential for expanding the insurance for domestic dogs and cats is absolutely huge. Horses are also the subject of specialized insurance, especially if the animal is a race or show horse.

It is reality that almost any kind of animal will eventually get sick and require medical care so what about insurance for other types of animals like birds, snakes, lizards, or turtles? A new style of pet health cover known as exotic pet insurance has been developed to cover these less common animals.

Exotic pet insurance originated in the United Kingdom well before it was introduced into the United States. In the very early days of pet health insurance there was not a lot of focus on this type of product because insurance for even domestic animals, such as dogs and cats, was not particularly popular.

So the insurance market seemed to ignore the exotic pet sector of the market on the misconception that animals such as birds and lizards rarely seemed to get sick. The insurers were of the opinion that the cover would not find traction and so they concentrated their efforts on the traditional pets. All this changed, however, when pet health insurance saw a boom of companies being established back in 1996 and 1997 and many of the new comers to the market gave their attention to untapped aspects of the pet insurance market.

Pet owners in the United Kingdom have a very large assortment of different animals as pets. The variety of animals led to advancement in pet insurance to cater for all aspects of the market. The United Kingdom, by virtue of its relatively small size, makes it an ideal place in which to test run new ideas. The cost of developing and promoting new products just like exotic pet insurance is much more simple in the UK than trying to do something similar in the United States.

After the initial success of exotic pet insurance in the United Kingdom this style of coverage started to find its way to the United States. Today even very large pet insurers such as Veterinary Pet Insurance now offer exotic pet insurance but it is not their main line of business. As is the case with the vast majority of pet health insurers they still focus on insuring dogs and cats.

The increased popularity of exotic pets has resulted in a corresponding demand for an appropriate style of insurance, and as such there are now a number of companies that are offering these specialized plans. So if you are in need of exotic pet insurance for your less common animal, just do a little bit of research and you are sure to find an insurance provider willing to assist you.
